On 26th November, 2011, the preliminary in UNNC of 2nd Ningbo Water Rocket Invitational Tournament held by IMechE came to a success. It has been attracted a great number of students with enthusiasm. It can be believed that from this they would experience which contains, whatever it is, the essence of engineering, the spirit of team and so on.

At the stroke of 2pm, it has already primed to go with completing the registration and distributing tournament numbers to participants. Then, the first 2 group entered the tournament area respectively, and take the last check of their rockets for preparation. Afterwards, they added certain water in their rocket; pumped the pressure into these treasures. Since they cannot pump it more, the launch button would be flicked. The water rocket seems to be a gun bullet screaming to the sky by the mixed power. The fixed part between the rocket and the launcher was separated immediately so that the reacting force pushed the rocket to the highest point. What a splendid image of rocket soaring. But our staffs were not forgetting their jobs, recording, contrasting, collecting nozzles, getting the former off, taking the latter on, and even clapping.

The streamline played across the sky as the crowd surprised, although some landed place appeared to some deviation. It did not only give us some joy, but also came up to be a revelation. These participates did not lose courage, to get satisfied distance for the next tern, they took it back and immediately started to nervous revise.

Through revising during the waiting time, the champion water rocket in UNNC turned up. The designer named XIONG Zhaolun & XU Zhisheng. It has been aware that anytime, anyway, never stop trying, and the god of engineering would not let you work in vain.

The 2nd Ningbo Water Rocket Invitational Tournament hosted by IMechE UNNC Student Chapter not only develops students’interests in mechanics and engineering, and develop the ability that putting theory and concept into being applied, but also popularizes the environment awareness and the spirit of studying on science.

On 4th September 2011, the engineering sharing session has successfully held by Institution of Mechanical Engineer (IMechE) and it is welcome by the freshmen warmly. During this session, year one students who are confused about their majors and do not know what to do have realized clearly about their academic life.

At the beginning of sharing session, the president of IMechE, Ma XingJian gave a brief introduction on the engineering organization IMechE. After that, year 2 students, Zhang ZhiAng and Yang XiaoHan were invited to introduce the engineering majors and solve some problems about changing major, scholarship and exchanging. At the end of the session, some excellent fellow students from different majors answered the questions from freshmen.

After the session finished, it not only make freshmen do not feel puzzle any more, also build a stage for sharing experience between engineers. IMechE thanks for your supports and hopes that you will join us!

After the selection of the summaries for content and the preliminary round, four participations were chosen to obtain the qualification for attending the national competition. They are Zhu Tianyi（Electric Bicycle）, Ma Xingjian（How to Disappear）,Zhang Qiting（Green Roof）from University Nottingham Ningbo China and Song Jilong from China Agriculture University （Dual Clutch Transmission）The judges of this competition included Dr. Kuan Yoong Chan (Head of Division of Engineering), Dr. Andrew Sowter and Philip Hall professor. During the competition, each competitor gave a detailed and professional presentation relating to engineering and answered questions from audience and judges ingeniously. After the fierce competition, the year two student Zhu Tianyi won the first price with the topic of Electric Bicycle, and two year student Zhang Qiting won the second price respectively. These two winners all successful promoted and correspondingly obtained the opportunity to participate in the “Speak Out for Engineering” Asia-Pacific region competition held in India.

The competition ended at 4:00 with success. During this nearly two-hour competition, all the participators showed their passion and love for engineering and impressed both the judges and audience. To make sure of the specialization and the enjoyment of the Invitational Tournament, it divided into two groups which are professional group and enjoyable group.

At 13:00, 28 teams first finished the registration and got their tournamentnumbers. Then, they displayed their rockets to the judges to get the marks for the appearance of the rockets. After the marking of the appearance, the professional groups entered the tournament area with their rockets for preparation. With the beginning of the timing, they first added certain water into their rocket before it was fixed on the launcher. The next step is to add the pressure in the rocket by pumping until the power is enough. Last, the fixed part between the rocket and the launcher was separated immediately so that the reacting force pushed the rocket to the highest point. Then the rocket effected by both of the streamline appearance and the empennage of the rocket taxied a certain distance. After the rocket landed, the staffs measured the distances, recorded them and gave the ranking after contrasting.

The teams participated in the enjoyable group entered the tournament area with their rocked after the competition of the professional group. Though the flying distance of their rocket could not be as good as the professional group, their particular and creative appearance showed their enthusiasm to the tournament and also made it more interesting.

Finally, Cao yang won the first prize in professional group whose water rocket flight through 160 m. And the first prize in the enjoyable group is Peachcheeks according to the unique appearance and amazing flight path.

The Ningbo Water Rocket Invitational Tournament hosted by UNNC Engineering Facultyandoperated by IMechE UNNC Student Chapter not only develops students’ interests in mechanics and engineering but also popularizes the environment awareness and the spirit of studying on science.

From the first round, seven competitors come out and competed for the next success. The judges of this competition included Dr. Tao Wu, Dr. Carsten TIETJE (both of them comes from Engineering Division) and Peter Water (Head of CELE). In the competition, each competitors gave a detailed and professional presentation relating to engineering and answered questions form audience and judges cleverly. After the fierce competition, the year two student Zhu Tianyi (Topic: Hybrid Vehicles)and two year one students Zhang Qiting（Topic:Green Roof）and Ma Xingjian（Topic:Carbon Capture and Storage）won. These three winners all successfully promoted and correspondingly obtained the opportunity to participate in the “Speak Out for Engineering” national competition held in March of next year. At that time they will compete with competitors from other universities for the opportunity to participate in the “Speak Out for Engineering” Asia-Pacific region competition held in Singapore.

After the lecture at the last week, all the spectators may have a primary understanding of the Photoshop. So we will hold the next lecture at the evening on Sunday this weekend. Thanks to the suggestion to our last lecture, so we will change some parts of our lecture to make it better. Here are the modifications to the lecture:

Many students ask us to give them the materials which will be used in the lecture. So we decide to put them on our official website for you. （www.unncimeche.org）

Many students asked us: if we miss one lecture, what we can do? We want to clarify that you just have one chance to attend the lecture but we will put our lecture notes on the official website. However, the notes may not help you very much.

Though our school is an international school and the main langue used in school is English, it may be hard to allow the most part of the spectators clear. So we decide to use Chinese to give you this lecture. We feel sorry for we can using English to show you this lecture but we want to thanks for some international students’ attending last week.
